Women’s Health Screening

Women’s Health Throughout Life

Women’s health changes at each stage of life. From experiencing your first period to menopause, each phase has its unique health challenges and needs. Understanding these changes is key to maintaining good health.

  • Teenagers

During puberty, girls transition into a new stage of life, often encountering various menstrual-related health issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, anaemia and more. Additionally, sexual health concerns, including cervical cancer and HPV (human papillomavirus), have become relevant. It is essential to stay updated with the latest vaccinations and screenings catered for teenage girls.

  • Reproductive Age

In the reproductive years, women deal with pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Pregnancy complications, abnormal uterine bleeding, and the risk of STDs are common concerns. Regular Pap smears and preventive check-ups are essential for early disease detection and better health outcomes. Women should be educated about family planning, prenatal care, and managing reproductive health issues during this stage.

  • Midlife

In midlife, cardiovascular health, flexibility, and posture become important. This stage often brings concerns about breast health, including lumps, pain, or discharge. Regular breast exams, including clinical exams, breast ultrasound—especially for women under 40—and mammograms—are recommended—and are key to maintaining health in the long run. Besides the necessary clinical examinations, staying active, eating a heart-healthy diet, and managing stress are key to maintaining health in the long run.

  • Menopause

Menopause usually begins in the late 40s to early 50s, marked by a year without menstruation and hormonal changes. Decreasing estrogenic levels can lead to physical changes like loss of hydration and tissue elasticity. With increased life expectancy, postmenopausal conditions are more common. Many women experience urinary incontinence, chronic migraines, and a higher risk of breast cancer. Osteoporosis, high cholesterol, and plaque build-up in arteries also become more common. Regular screenings and proactive management are vital during and after menopause.

Essential Components of a Women’s Health Check-up

A thorough women’s health check-up includes several essential components that aim to provide a more holistic and extensive overview of women’s health. At Atlas Associates Clinic, we offer a comprehensive women’s health screening package that includes the following components:

  • Mammogram
    • A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast. It helps doctors identify and diagnose abnormalities in the breast, such as lumps. This is a standard screening test used to detect early signs of breast cancer. However, a mammogram screening test is recommended for women aged 40 and above.
  • Ultrasound Breast
    • Similar to a mammogram, this test helps detect any early signs of breast cancer. Women aged 40 and below are recommended to take an ultrasound breast screening. However, unlike a mammogram, an ultrasound scan is a testing technique that uses ultrasound waves to detect abnormalities in the breast, such as lumps.
  • Full Blood Count
    • This test helps to identify any abnormalities in the blood. It helps to diagnose a variety of illnesses, infections and diseases. The test measures the number and status of the blood cells.
  • Cholesterol Test
    • This test measures the levels of the different types of cholesterol present in your body. High levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) indicate a higher risk of developing heart-related diseases. However, high levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) can protect your heart and lower the risk of heart disease.
  • Blood Glucose Test
    • A blood glucose test helps measure blood glucose (sugar) levels.
  • Anaemia
    • As women experience heavy blood loss during menstruation, they have a higher risk of being anaemic. This test helps identify the blood count in your body and helps indicate if you have an iron deficiency.
  • Resting ECG
    • This is a non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity in the heart. It helps detect abnormalities in the heart’s rhythm and structure, such as arrhythmias, heart blockages, or damage to the heart muscle.
  • PAP Smear
    • This is a screening test to help detect any abnormal cells in the cervix that might indicate cervical cancer.

The Benefits of Regular Check-ups

Early prevention is key. Regular health check-ups are crucial for maintaining good health and preventing diseases. Key benefits include:

  • Early Detection: Identifying potential health issues early increases the chances of successful treatment. Early detection of conditions like breast cancer, cervical cancer, and heart disease can lead to better management and outcomes.
  • Preventive Care: Regular screenings and tests can prevent illnesses by addressing risk factors early. Preventive care, such as vaccinations and lifestyle advice, can significantly reduce the risk of many health problems.
  • Personalised Health Plans: Tailored health plans based on your unique needs and life stage ensure you receive the most appropriate care. Personalised care plans address specific health concerns and guide on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
